A game trailer has to give people a feel for the world they’re about to enter. A logo animation has a shorter job: introduce a name and give it some character. Both need movement and timing that suit the game or brand.
I’m Richie Phillips, a freelance motion designer based in Leicester. My gaming work includes a trailer for Dystopika, an animated logo for Multiplay and a 3D tournament ident for Gfinity’s Champions of Champions. Each started with a different brief, from exploring a game engine to bringing a supplied logo to life.
Creating the Dystopika game trailer
Voids Within commissioned me to create a trailer for Dystopika using the game’s own engine. I had creative freedom to explore the tools and choose the camera angles, which made getting to know the software an important part of the job.
I created the movement within the game engine, then brought the shots together with motion graphics and editing. Learning the camera controls was the biggest challenge: before I could build the edit, I needed to understand how to get the shots I wanted.
The finished trailer runs for 81 seconds and was shared on YouTube and social media. My role covered the movement created in the engine, the graphics and the video edit.
For me, this is an interesting part of game trailer production. The camera choices and the edit work together to shape how someone first encounters the game. Motion graphics then become part of that presentation, with their timing considered alongside the footage.

Multiplay: turning a logo into motion graphics
For Multiplay, I worked directly with the client to create an animated brand ident for its gaming and events audience. The supplied logo was the starting point; the challenge was finding an abstract way to bring wires and cables into the animation.
I combined 2D motion graphics with 3D particle effects to develop that idea around the logo. The finished animation was eight seconds long, so the concept needed to work within a short sequence.
The client loved the treatment and went on to commission graphics for future events. It’s a good example of how a single logo animation can become the starting point for a wider working relationship.

Gfinity Champions of Champions: a 3D logo animation
Gfinity’s brief was to take its supplied logo and turn it into an epic animated ident for a gaming tournament.
I recreated the logo in 3D, developed the animation and put together the edit. I then passed the cut to a sound designer, whose audio added another layer to the finished piece.
The result was an 11-second brand ident shown at the Champions of Champions tournament. I handled the 3D logo animation and editing, working directly with the client and collaborating with the sound designer on the final result.

Planning a game trailer or animated logo
These projects show different ways I can help a gaming team: creating movement within a game engine, editing a trailer, building motion graphics or animating an existing logo in 2D or 3D.
If you’re planning something similar, a useful starting point is to share:
- What you’re promoting and who you want to reach
- Your logo, brand guidelines, footage or available game assets
- Where the animation will appear and which formats you need
- A few visual references, your deadline and your budget
For a trailer involving in-engine capture, we can discuss access to the game and its camera tools before agreeing the approach. For a logo animation, we can start with your existing artwork and talk through the style and movement you have in mind.
